All Things Being Equal Book Event Sponsored by Demos

Instigating Opportunity in an Equitable Time

All Things Being Equal argues that contrary to popular belief, opportunity in America is in crisis.  Alan Jenkins and Brian Smedley raise pressing socio-economic issues including, but not limited to, the poor state of our nation's educational system, mass incarceration, real estate inequity, and housing programs that reinforce segregation.  Tying these concerns together, the authors assert that all stated topics are a result of a failure to provide equal opportunity.

In explaining the inequity of socio-economic prospects, Jenkins and Smedley point to class mobility remaining at an all-time low, Horatio Algers being few and far between, and discriminatory reasons behind the ever increasing wage gap.  Half critique, half road-map-for-the-future, All Things Being Equal includes eight original essays by top-notch thinkers pointing to areas in American life where opportunity is missing and showing us how to instigate it.
