Amplify Values In These Emerging Issues

Pushing Back Against Right Wing Narratives on Unemployment Benefits

This week we are pushing back against an age-old right wing narrative that resurfaced following the release of April's job market report. The problematic narrative suggests that people are not returning to the workforce because they’re leaning on unemployment benefits. This is a harmful narrative that we have seen time and time again, unfairly blaming and stigmatizing the individual when instead we need to put the blame where it belongs by strengthening our narrative that systemic barriers – such as low wage jobs, lack of affordable childcare for parents, and unequal Paid Leave benefits – are the bigger issues preventing people from returning to work so quickly.
