Renounce Trump’s Shameful Response to Refugees in Need
Since the end of the Second World War, the United States has prided itself as a humanitarian world leader in protecting people fleeing persecution. Yet last week, President Trump signed his Presidential Determination on Refugee Admissions for Fiscal Year 2020 to allow only 18,000 individuals to access the U.S. resettlement program. This is the lowest refugee admissions quota ever set in the history of the program. At a time when there are nearly 70.8 million forcibly displaced people around the world, Trump’s admissions number is a shameful response and suggests a white supremacist xenophobic agenda. Additionally, the resettlement quota will decimate programs around the country that have worked for years to welcome refugees to our country. Instead of this quota, the U.S. should return our nation to the role of as a global leader in refugee protection. Discuss this development by citing the values of Community, Family Unity, Economic Security, and Voice.
