Amplify Values In These Emerging Issues

Support Rulings to Halt Trump's Public Charge Rule & Border Wall Funding
Last week, federal judges in three states halted the implementation of the Trump administration's unfair "public charge" rule for immigrant families. These preliminary injunctions are a huge victory for immigrant families. Unfortunately, the rulings do not affect the public charge determinations made by the Department of State's consular processing of immigrants in their home country. Also last week, a judge in El Paso, TX ruled that it was illegal for Trump to use $3.6 billion in Pentagon money intended for military construction to build his border wall. Discuss these legal decisions by citing the values of Community, Economic Security, and Family Unity.

Applaud California for Banning Private Prisons

Last week, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 32, which will phase out the use of all private, for-profit prisons, including both prisons and immigration detention facilities, in the state. Despite this victory, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) could transfer detained immigrants to other parts of the country, even though it has the power to release them. Discuss the legislation and next steps by citing the values of Community, Redemption, and Economic Security.
